Laura Korch was born in Pontiac, Michigan and raised in a small town called Highland. During high school, Laura developed a strong interest in ceramics. Supported and encouraged by her instructors, she left for Germany as an exchange student at the age of eighteen.

For one year, Laura worked with a potter in the city of Friedberg. While there, she was exposed to gas kilns and Hohr-Grenzhausen, a school with a long tradition of salt firing.
